Communicating Effectively With Those "All Employees" Memos - Time's A Wastin'!?

The Triangle Business Journal article (3/6/2023), put about with such verve by SECU marketeers, trumpeted the frequency of "All Employees" memos from the new leadership at SECU. Believe it is safe to say that past SECU leadership would not have communicated in this "fashion". But, Chairman Ayers and the SECU Board have adopted a new culture, new direction for SECU!

Here's a verbatim  transcript of  a series of "All Employees" on a lazy (apparently!), "casual" (obviously!) Fall afternoon:

Good afternoon Team SECU...I hope you all are having a great beginning of the week.

Leigh Brady and I were chatting earlier...about the emails I've gotten asking for a Jean's Friday...type program. I have worked in places before where we donated $1 or $2 to United Way or some other charity facilitated by the employer...to be able to where jeans on Friday. I always liked that program. Unfortunately, it would take some time for us to put in place...as we would need to determine the charity, how to collect it, etc... So, in lieu of that, for now... Let's go with Casual Fun Friday's for the Holidays... so between now and New Year's... you're free to where jeans on Fridays...

But PLEASE, keep it respectful. Lets not make this a bad thing...Please where nice looking jeans. No rips, No holes...no mud. We're still managing our member's money and we want to show ourselves to look respectful to them. And we want to remain respect to each other. So lets see how this goes for the next couple of months. 😋

Enjoy...relax a little, but lets keep serving our members well. It's the most important thing we do together, as an organization.  Serving our members.

Thanks everyone,  Happy Tuesday afternoon!!

Jim

Okay... so getting a lot of questions about shoes.   I think sneakers are fine. .. again keep them respectful.  No holes, no rips, no mud...😊

Now, for you efficiency (frequently claimed, but not so frequently practiced at SECU these days!) experts, let's calculate the cost of this important communications from a chief executive to "All Employees".

Looks like about a 15 minute "adventure" (2:43 to 3:01 pm). So, 7,000 employees spending 15 minutes thoughtfully considering (while laughing insanely!) this...whatever. That equals 105,000 minutes (15 min. x 7,000 folks) or 1,750 hours (105,000 min. / 60 min. in an hour) or about 43+ work weeks (1,750 hours/40 hour work week). 43 work weeks of the SECU members' money spent figuring out how to spell "wear" and assuring "All Employees" they needed to "where" shoes..."No holes, no rips, no mud...😊"

As the chief exec led off with in another "All Employee"..."Hooty whoooo"!😉😉😉

  2. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

It would be more comical if he weren't a significant cog in the engine that looks after 2.7 million members and their $50 billion+ in assets. Instead it's kind of scary.

    The members deserve better.

  3. Good news... most employees just ignore his emails anyway. Most of his communications are incoherent and dont include alot of substance. Keep in mind, this is the same guy who instructed branch managers on a conference call to take the audit manual and burn it. The rest of the executive management team sitting at the table with him let out a few nervous, fake laughs and said no -we shouldn't do that. So he followed up with, well you should at least take it outside and stomp on it! Jim Hayes seems unfit to lead this organization. He's proven to be all self-promotion with no real leadership qualities. And the high level managers who are following (out of fear?) are just as much to blame. At what point will the powers that be realize and acknowledge that this "expirement" has gone awry? The narrative that we need to change everything at SECU for its future success has grown tiresome. It's not too late to fix this wrong and get back to doing what we do best...serving our members and treating employees with respect and dignity.
