To the Editor,
I am writing this letter as a long-term member and former employee (retired 2021) of the State Employees’ Credit Union. This credit union has been a vibrant member cooperative since 1937 and has had an office in Surry County since 1984. I began working for the Credit Union in 1992 as a Peak Teller. I was already a member through the common bond of my spouse because his father worked for the state of North Carolina, but I had no idea of what truly made the credit union unique/different. However, upon becoming a part-time employee (peak teller), I began to see just how unique/different this cooperative was from other financial institutions.
The credit union gave the ordinary individual member a voice; a place to go where they could receive individual, fair, and honest treatment. They could tell their story and someone would listen and take into consideration all that had occurred within their lives financially and personally. Loan decisions were made locally most of the time and if the decision was a “not today but maybe six months from now, and by the way, let me help you get to where you need to be financially,” the member could say I want someone else to hear my story, and the story would be taken to the next level for consideration on an individual basis. Interest rates for lending and savings were the same for every member no matter their social economic standing. Every member received the same consideration. Every member has a vote; one vote per member independent of funds on deposit.
However, over the past three years the credit union board of directors has decided some changes are needed. They have decided to implement Risk-Based Lending (interest rates based on credit scores); they have decided that many local decisions will now be pre-determined by credit scores; they have taken away some of the local decisions and responded with a line in the sand approach.
Now this year during the Annual Meeting “of the membership,” SECU Members will not be allowed to ask a question. If a member wants to ask a question, it must be submitted prior to the meeting. If a question submitted is not answered during the question-and-answer session (1-hour maximum duration for this session), “and are of general interest to members, we will post a summary on our website after the meeting.” Not sure who determines “general interest to members”.
During this meeting there will be an election of four Board of Directors. I ask that if YOU are a member of the SECU, take time to review the candidates, talk with your local SECU staff, and determine for yourself who should be on this Board and vote. The SECU website (www.ncsecu.org) contains the information for the upcoming Annual Membership Meeting including candidate information and absentee voting instructions. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the Koury Convention Center, Greensboro.
