SECU - The Annual Meeting Strike 2.3: Women Can't Think (Or Speak) For Themselves...

https://d3525k1ryd2155.cloudfront.net/h/375/072/1238072375.0.x.jpg  ... Ms. Brady nose the truth!

“… Let me be clear on that group of members; 28 of those 32 were SECU retirees,” said Brady. “These were members where Blaine gave them a sheet of paper and said ‘You read this. [link CUToday article]

Although the previously noted three female speakers at the SECU Annual Meeting were not "SECU retirees", thought in fairness I should include at least one.  Sue Avery Douglas grew up in the N.C. mountains around Morganton - and never got over it. You know how those N.C. mountain folks can be sometimes.

Sue Douglas is not known for being shy nor uncertain about sharing her opinions with people. And, generally being the most knowledgeable person at the table about SECU that could be problematic; as she suffers fools lightly and takes no prisoners in debates. I speak from experience with scars to prove it.

But, her colleagues forgave her because 1) she usually was right and 2) we always knew where her heart was.  Sue Douglas believed in SECU - its members, its purpose and its employees - unconditionally.

Sue Douglas spoke extemporaneously at the 2023 Annual Meeting. Here's what Ms. Douglas had to say:

"Hi! I am Sue Douglas, retired after 47 years at the State Employees' Credit Union. I personally know the majority of the employees in this room and the Board members at the table. I am scared to death at what I see happening to my Credit Union right now.

I am more scared to see how many of the people sitting at these tables are not aware of some of the things that are happening. Risk-based lending - those who do not need good rates get the best rates, credit cards that give rewards to those who never pay a penny of interest on that credit card. These are facts, you can go look it up yourselves.

But it scares me to death to think of the number of people sitting in this room who are just happy with how the Credit Union has been for so many years. I ask you to open your eyes to pay attention to what's happening whether you are an Advisory Board member or an employee.

Things are changing and it's time for the members to take back this Credit Union.  Thank you."

... I had to transcribe the above from the video [link at 1:39:56], because evidently I forgot to write it down "when I made it up" according to Ms. Brady. (I'll try to do better next year!)

According to CEO Leigh Brady, all those speakers at the SECU Annual Meeting [link CUToday article]:

“… Let me be clear on that group of members; 28 of those 32 were SECU retirees,” said Brady. “These were members where Blaine gave them a sheet of paper and said ‘You read this.’ And gave the next one a sheet of paper and said, ‘Now you read this.’ They were holding papers where Blaine gave them talking points. And they were supposed to stand up during the comment section and read their comments.”

Brady said she knows for a fact that is what occurred."

https://granville-chamber.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/annette-myers-round.png  Annette Myers is known to be an intelligent, "somewhat independent" individual - and strong minded leader.  She is known as " Ms. Everything" in Granville County, North Carolina. An educator, County commissioner, Vance-Granville Community College boards, Chamber of Commerce and school boards, John Penn [signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence !] Citizen of the Year, Mountain Creek Baptist Church, committees dealing with everything from conservation to the opioid crisis, Senior Tarheel Legislature board... and that's just for starters. You get the picture - one of those "forces of nature"-types.

Annette Myers also serves on the SECU Oxford Branch Advisory Board. Ms. Myers spoke at the SECU Annual Meeting. I did not know she was going to be at the meeting, did not know she was going to speak, and most certainly did not write her comments.

Despite what Ms. Brady "knows for a fact", Annette Myers doesn't need anyone's help in forming her own opinions.

... when Ms. Myers speaks I listen, so should the SECU Board.

Dr. Annette Beatty was a speaker at the SECU Annual Meeting [link SECU Annual Meeting at 1:45:45]

Dr. Beatty is a former educator in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth School System - claiming to have been teaching "since dinosaurs roamed the Earth", a community volunteer and activist of the first order, and is Chairman of the SECU Advisory Board in Winston-Salem . At the Annual Meeting, Dr. Beatty spoke strongly against the introduction of "race-based lending" (her words!) at SECU. That Dr. Beatty was both articulate and eloquent should come as no surprise. As you will note, Dr. Beatty is also a well-known motivational speaker - and writer!

For the record, I have never met Dr. Beatty, but do wish I could claim to have authored her speech - I didn't. Quite sure that Dr. Beatty - as with all the members who spoke - would find Ms. Brady's assertion that they were unable to think and speak for themselves to be incredible, bizarre - and simply unbelievable!

Why does the SECU Board sit silent and condone this?
