H. 410 "Credit Union Updates" - How a Widows And Orphans Hustle Works

Had mentioned in a prior post that CEO Dan Schline, of the Carolinas' Credit Union League, was running a "widows and orphans" hustle within  H. 410 "Credit Union Updates".  Some folks asked what's that?

A widows and orphans clause is used in legislation to distract attention from the unsavory parts of a proposal one is pushing through.  In addition to phrases which purport to protect widows and orphans; you might also add clauses which support veterans and the flag, praise Motherhood and apple pie, salute God and Country, promise to level the playing field, and, of course, mandate lower taxes. [If you're in North Carolina, always throw in support of NASCAR and BBQ for good measure!]

The idea is to try and "set up" your opponents as heartless, greedy, selfish folks. The type of people, who not only won't support your "fair and reasonable" bill; but, also of the type who would  put widows and orphans on the street, " diss" God and Country, hate apple pie, and are always wanting to raise your taxes. [And don't know who drove the "#3" car.] Got it?

The widows and orphans hustle in H. 410 is this part:

(Look - an elephant!!!)  - "... any credit union organized under Articles 14A to 14L of this Chapter may also permit membership of the following located in this State: (1) Individuals and families that earn income at or below the federal poverty threshold. (2) Women-owned or minority-owned businesses. (3) Under-served areas, as defined by the Federal Credit Union Act."

So, now you are hearing Dan Schline and his accomplices implying that opponents of H. 410 are against 1) poor folks, 2) women, 3) minorities, and of course  4) folks living in our National and State Parks, bogs, swamps, riverbeds, wildlife refuges, and other generally uninhabitable places - a.k.a. to Mr. Schline as "financial deserts"!!!

.... and while our State Legislators are "Looking Over There!

Mr. Schline will be trying to pick our pockets by :

  1. Removing all limitations on membership in individual credit unions,
  2. Providing unlimited membership and commercial lending to state, regional and national corporations,
  3. Encouraging the export of jobs and capital out of North Carolina,
  4. Abandoning North Carolina working men and women,
  5. Further dismantling the member-owner controls over N.C. credit unions,

.... while laughing at us - and the State Legislators who support him - all the way to the ("new") bank!

  1. Don't be fooled. This bill is bad for members of ALL credit unions. Takes power away from the individual members who really own the credit union and puts it in the hands of the CEO, Board and corporations. It's misdirection and trickery. Don't let them get away with it!

    1. I find it telling about how bad this bill truly is that it is being denounced not only by the Bankers Association but also by the legacy leaders and employees of the 2nd largest credit union in the United States. The fact that these very different groups are both opposing this bill should raise red flags for any politician that is half way paying attention. Please I beg you all to contact your congressmen and let them know about this travesty and direct them here to see what this bill is REALLY all about.

  2. it’s weird our leaders are lobbying for this in the first place… AND PUBLICLY. That is so embarrassing. it’s really telling to our leaders belief for the reason we operate… which is apparently now growth and money. Think back- Remember what our modules use to teach us, our purpose is to enhance our members FINANCIAL WELL-BEING. That’s what we do every day. Our reason to operate. Now…. growth and increase assets. Increase # of members. Charge unhealthy interest rates. Sale sale sale. Increase revenue. i got my mind on my money and my money on my mind. They’re not even ashamed to talk about it... Yet despite that greedy goal and mindset, Hayes still managed to lose 2 BILLION dollars last year… we know he can’t meet our standards, but my goodness the guy can’t even meet his own goals…… CEO’s use to get fired for that

    1. Knew there was a reason our valuable module program was canned so quickly after Hayes' arrival to SECU. The program always told us two things - 1. whether an employee could learn about SECU's services and effectively serve our members and 2. Whether an employee was a fit for the organization or not. Hayes knew he couldn't pass either test and he hasn't.

  3. If Haze is a part of this, the bill should fail. He's failed at everything else since coming to Carolina.

  4. All my support is with those NC Bankers tomorrow. Put Hayes and Schline back in their place, appears neither one fit to be Credit Union leaders.

  5. Hayes: "my main focus is Growth of SECU"
Losing 2 billion of the members ' assets, you may want to rethink that statement.

    1. His real focus is recognition… it doesn’t appear he’s getting either

    2. Oh yes he is and its the recognition he deserves. No substance there.
