https://scholarship.seanc.org/images/scholarshiplogo.pngListened to a presentation at a SEANC* Board meeting over the weekend. The presenter was the Chief Operations Officer of SECU, Leigh Brady. Ms. Brady had in tow - apparently for support - SECU Board member Mark Fleming, who smiled and waved but remained silent.

Ms. Brady's report highlighted many upcoming changes in technology at SECU. Those changes sounded positive, but were improvements mainly in the area of digital convenience for members - quicker, some ease of use refinements, a few new "bells and whistles" - but no major new programs or services for SECU members. SECU COO Brady did admit, a bit sheepishly, that these changes were going to take "several years" to implement - a quite different and far more accurate account than the "California Dreamin"-hype and hypocrisy put forth in those infamous "Fireside Chats" last November. Ms. Brady also touched on the recent NCR "✈jet set ✈ digital deal" - no jet lag was obvious.

In response to a story from a SEANC Board member on the benefits of the tax prep program to her grandmother and others, Ms. Brady gave a tough luck it's not coming back response. To several impassioned personal accounts on the adverse impact of risk-based lending at SECU, Ms. Brady heme-and-hawed to a "I'll take a look at it" response, but that she'll actually do nothing was clear. French queen Marie Antoinette could not have said it better.

In the political realm, Ms. Brady assured the SEANC Board that H. 410 "was not SECU's bill"- she was just trying to help out other credit unions in North Carolina. That statement will come as a surprise to many legislators, lobbyists, N.C. credit union leaders, and many SECU members and staff. Would appear that SECU would now like to stick Dan Schline, CEO of the Carolinas Credit Union League, with the fallout from the potential defeat of this high-risk legislation. Getting crowded under the bus, but room can be made for Dan!

Ms. Brady summed up by categorically stating that SECU had no plans to expand membership. None, no way, not-a-bit!  Mark  Fleming, the SECU Board member, seemed to cheer on those remarks, raising no objections. After the meeting, I introduced myself to Mr. Fleming and asked if he were aware of the increasing controversy arising over SECU? He said "he had gotten 2 or 3 emails". I pointed out to Mr. Fleming that the current SECU CEO had stated unequivocally to advisory board leaders that SECU did in fact have plans to expand [here (again!) is SECU's own Fireside Chats video at 22:21 - "We would like to, we would like to expand our field of membership..."].

Mark Fleming ImageBut the real cruncher to Mr. Fleming was I informed him that I both knew and could document that he personally sat through several Board discussions on expanding membership at SECU. Most egregiously was the discussion - in which Mr. Fleming was directly involved - of using the SECU Foundation as the vehicle to expand SECU membership willy-nilly. The scheme being if any person in the world chose to make a donation to the SECU Foundation, then that "anybody and everybody" individual (or corporation under H. 410!) would be eligible to join SECU. Mr. Fleming said: "Well, I don't know anything about that." Yes he does!

Something is sorely wrong at SECU.  Especially if, SECU Board members are endorsing public statements by senior staff to SEANC members which simply aren't true, as happened this weekend.

... and even worse, if the SECU Board and senior staff are coercing front line staff - in fear of their jobs - into remaining silent about what is actually coming down at SECU. What's "coming down" are assets, member service, employee morale, and a hard-earned reputation of trust.

And, Mr. Fleming, a "Well, I don't know anything about that" defense isn't going to hold up in the court of public opinion, especially when it is well-documented that you in fact do know better.

..."courting" disaster?

  1. Mr. Blaine, are you as shocked as we are by all this? Did you foresee this would happen one day after you and Mike lord’s retirement?

  2. Holy Crap! Just when you think you've heard it all.....unbelievable. It's infuriating that Mr. Fleming and the rest of the Board think the members (and employees) are just plain stupid and don't see what's going on.

SECU's Board is just as corrupt as Gym Haze and Executive Management. Guess I was holding out hope there was a sliver of decency, integrity and ethics left on the BOD. Sadly my last bit of hopeful optimism has been misplaced.

There's a change coming because the members are figuring out...

    They Deserve Better

    2. I call BS on the 2 or 3 emails he has received. I myself have sent at least 3 to the board members and asked for a response, which I never received.

    3. Likewise on sending emails to the board. Heard nothing back.

  4. Jimmy has stated since day 1 he wants to expand the membership, establish business accounts and expand hours of operations to be open on Saturday since he liked to work on Saturday in college.

    1. Every employee has proof of these statements as well! Gymmy purple haze was dumb enough to state that in his All Employees email months ago

  5. if you are stating that there is no intent on expanding membership, you are blatantly lying (no sugar coating it)

  6. we now have a trust issue .... and once that is lost, you may never get it back. it takes forever to build trust and a moment to lose it

  7. Hey Jim Hayes, to reply to your email you sent out at work today. What would make secu better and what secu isn’t doing right is getting rid of you, the board and RBL. That’s where we should start. We don’t like a CEO that is wanting to outsource jobs. We don’t want a ceo that pushes the micromanagement mentality. We don’t want a ceo that works his workforce to death. Why take the 4on4off from the MSS employees? Thats an attractive work schedule that provides you time to explore other passions in life while giving your all when you are on the clock. It’s good for mental health. Instead y’all just throw a lame mental health app at us wasting more of our members money….We need increased pay due to inflation. We need you to quit tinkering with our retirement benefits. We need to decentralize the credit union and have employees back at their local branches. Sure WFH should still be an option but we need MSS centers in these branches out in the rural areas like there was. We need our local VPs, SVPs, regional and districts back. That provides good jobs for fellow North Carolinians and helps local job markets. Some towns don’t have anything other than a McDonald’s and a Walmart for jobs. Technology is great, but let’s not automate tellers and reduce the role of the loan officer. Those are good jobs that teach valuable skills. Not everything should be automated. Our membership loves the in person experience. We know what the goal is for digitizing everything. It’s no secret. It’s about reducing the number of employees and increasing the bottom line for you Mr. Hayes. Sometimes not everything is not about money and the credit union has never and will never be about that. You have the opportunity to buck the board and turn this ship around and do it the right thing still. You would possibly gain some respect back. But I know that’s not in your blood and it has never been. One day you’ll wake up and realize you never made a difference in anyone’s life but yourself. But 7K employees make a difference everyday trying to help members even under the crazy regime we have now. I’d rather make 35k and help people the right way than screw over millions while making millions any day. I hope you sleep well because I sure would not.

    1. Well said. I hope Haze reads this. He's not as well liked as he thinks he is. Same goes for the BOD.

    2. Nailed it. The modules that every single one of us complained about had a purpose. Though we took them just 'get over with it and move on' without paying any attention, we still absorbed the essence of it subconsciously by osmosis and therefore understood the principles of the credit union and started acting right. But now that's gone too, there's nothing to help the employees understand the concepts of a credit union and it's symbiotic relationship with the community.

    3. He's not as well liked as he thinks he is. Ha! That's why they hired the loud mouthed cultural officer who also triple duties as HR and their spokesperson who will - 'make you like her' and him and everyone else around them. Remember the last town hall meeting where everyone was abused, bullied and threatened by her? I bet she exceeded everyone's expectations and got great kudos. And a bunch of legacies went around declaring loudly they loved it just to save their skins.

    4. And what exactly qualified her as the "Culture Officer" since she was just a mid-level manager at Local before coming to SECU?

    5. Good question. In the same breath, she falls right under the career path that's being adopted for the incoming new hires:

      1. Stepping into an elevated/higher position than the one held in the previous work place or
      2. Come in with a similar position as the old work place and then promoted ASAP

Also been noticing these days the new hire email doesn't mention the previous work place information anymore. But we are adequately informed about their dogs, cats, kids, spouses, etc. As long as I am not asked to pet sit or house sit I am good and lucky.... 🤞🤞🤞

  8. "One day you’ll wake up and realize you never made a difference in anyone’s life but yourself."

The new regime is made up of a bunch of watered down banking standards that is lackluster, boring, unimaginative and dull that makes NO difference and does NOT standout. The new regime is incapable of comprehending the word "difference". That's why every single "There's a difference" sign was taken out as soon as they got control.

Grasping and assimilating what a credit union is and stands for, and the "difference" it makes in ordinary people's lives is alien to them since they all think and act like they are a cut above us. That's why they are completely wiping out the essence of this extremely successful institution. Though the membership is limited and is local to NC only, SECU still became the 2nd largest credit union - "NO PAID" advertising. Good ethics, "different" mindset, steadfastly remaining unsold by not taking handouts from ANYONE (vendors and others alike), nor giving handouts and proper planning, along with a dedicated team of workers made it happen.

Extending the existing ideology and style would have further enhanced and elevated this place and they could have etched a name for themselves. Sad to see a great institution being dragged down by a bunch of people with a lot of baggage hiring more people who have no concept of a place like this.

  9. The funny thing is, Hayes thinks he’s smarter and knows best for our members and NC… more than 7,000 employees. And he just simply doesn’t. His over-confidence in himself combined with poor basic leadership skills is the comical part. I’m honestly rather embarrassed for him.

  10. Transients cannot build a strong, long-standing place. You need a bunch of loyal, dedicated team of workers to constantly and tirelessly shape and reshape to build a legacy.

The #TeamSECU Hazey boasts of and calls him a part of is made up of these workers. He pretends like he built this place, takes credit for everything that occurs, and tirelessly keeps taking selfies with himself in the foreground to fake post/email. Those that helped design and build this place made themselves a part of the background and therefore no selfies. NOT because they did not know about plastering their faces non-stop and shoving it down everyone's throat.

The real #TeamSECU that Hazey is part of is NOT made up with these dedicated employees but transients who will cut and run at the slightest inconvenience or as soon as they find other green pastures. All one needs to do is look closer at the people whom he promoted and hired and associates himself with him to see the NO-difference. Why else did we say "There's a difference"? To build a legacy for ALL. Not tear it down by alleged and likely involvement in shady schemes.

  11. Oh, he's still in a stupendous haze, dazed by the reflection of his gaze (understandable since he rose to this position in spite of his questionable resume). Reason why he still needs the "legacy" COO to be his front woman. Also needs the "legacy" to hoodwink and mislead everyone - an employee of 35 year tenure is vouching, therefore all must is good.
