SECU Board Of Directors - Individual Accountability - Jo Anne Sanford

Jo Anne Sanford

   Jo Anne Sanford  https://secuvote.ey.com/

Jo Anne Sanford has been a member of the SECU Board of Directors since 2005.  After 20 years with the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office, she was appointed to the North Carolina Utilities Commission  For most of her tenure at the Commission she served as Chair.A graduate of NC State University and the School of Law at UNC-CH, she has extensive experience in regulated utility industries. She practices law in Sanford Law Office, PLLC

At SECU I worked with only three of the current 11 SECU Board members, Mr. Bob Brinson [see 7/4/23 post], Mr. McKinley Wooten, Jr. [see 7/5/23 post], and the third person was Ms. Jo Anne Sanford. Ms. Sanford had a distinguished legal career with the N.C. Attorney General's Office and was well-known for the depth of her expertise across a broad range of governmental affairs. An exceptional "networker", Ms. Sanford excelled in building strong relationships - long before digital calendars, alerts and LinkedIn made that a simple process. Ms. Sanford was also a "top table" political player in her party, as proved by her appointment to the N.C. Utilities Commission - one of the ripest and richest plum positions in State Government. At the Utilities Commission from 1995-2007, she served as chair and became a nationally recognized expert in the regulated utilities field.

Since 2007 and for most of her tenure on the SECU Board, Ms. Sanford has practiced law, consulted with and lobbied on behalf of the most prominent regulated utilities in the State - the type of transition from being the chief regulator of an industry to being a highly paid consultant and lobbyist for that same industry, which often gives ordinary citizens pause. Ms. Sanford's decades long work as a lobbyist is notably absent from her SECU published bio blip. I never found any concerns with that work, nor transition. SECU after all was not in the utilities business, had no political agenda with the State Legislature, took no sides in politics, didn't even employ a lobbyist - but that was over 7 years ago. Things have changed at SECU.

SECU knew its purpose and mission - improving the financial stature of member-consumers in North Carolina - which was, and remains, a never-ending challenge, a full-time Sisyphean struggle for progress, against the odds. But things have changed at SECU.

After 2007, Ms. Sanford's clients and associates were of course not your typical N.C. teacher, highway patrolman, healthcare employee, prison guard, or highway worker. Lobbying and consulting for companies such as Carolina Power and Light, Duke Power, and Piedmont Natural Gas was far more corporate. Ms Sanford became a player in winner-take-all merger and takeover brawls, high stakes regulatory influence hawking, and play-for-keeps political machinations. For reference check out the CP&L/Duke Power merger disaster in 2012. Enough to make even Machiavelli blush!

Definitely the fast lane! Master-of-the-universe power-seeking, which has been known to intoxicate even the most rational of egos. Folks caught up in such a "separate universe", often times, tend to reflect the company they keep, come to believe that their experiences are the norm, and that their world is the real world. It isn't - at least not for most SECU members.

Ms. Sanford became the chief proponent of business/commercial services at SECU, which seemed to reflect the interests of her corporate associates and clients more than the traditional members of SECU. The topic was well-researched and presented to the full Board on several occaisions. Impartial, arm's-length analyses found that SECU could not provide business/commercial services of higher quality, nor at lower costs than the banking industry. When surveyed, business operaters indicated they needed far more than just a checking account or occasional loan; they needed payment processing, payroll and tax help, cash and coin, and accounting support. There was little interest in business/commercial services from SECU and none if the service offered no financial advantage to the business owner. Why "switch banks" if there was no advantage? There was clear evidence - still is ! - that the North Carolina banking industry would be enraged, and would oppose, the commercialization of SECU. The Board as a whole was convinced, but not all seemed bothered by the facts. "Off the table, behind the scenes" maneuvering began to blossom - always dangerous for transparency and open discussion in a member-owned cooperative, but not unusual in the corporate world

❗The New Election Procedures, however, are the most unsettling legacy which Ms. Sanford has sponsored for the SECU membership. Don't even need to dust the file for fingerprints. As the best, most experienced "corporate" attorney on the Board, her imprimatur is clear.  More on that shortly. Spoiler alert: It's not a pretty picture. https://secuvote.ey.com/

✅  The definition of a lobbyist or "special interest" in the political sense is a group that tries to influence government or business decisions to benefit itself. Perhaps it is naive to believe that an organization like SECU can remain above the fray of politics, pressure groups, and special interests. But, it did so for 85 years. https://secuvote.ey.com/

✅ Events of the last two years all smack of a new "corporate consciousness" at SECU. The "new/new" has quickly undermined the long track record of financial success and fair dealing at SECU. Bad ideas based on pet peeves, personal agendas, and special interests - without fact-based, honest data and research - will always lead to bad results. Why is this happening at SECU? https://secuvote.ey.com/

... a "new/new" corporate consciousness of "special interests" at SECU? - unconscionable! https://secuvote.ey.com/

never a truer statement ... this world is consumed by these folks, and they aren't afraid to use their powers to crush everyday working families. Hence RBL ... one of the absolute travesties of this board & CEO's (NBSAO (new boss same as old)) . Every time I see them reference "equity" in conversation I think of this (RBL) and realize they aren't fooling me. (I won't speak for others). Mom said watch what they do not what they say.

    1. these tax services this BOD's & CEO's (NBSAO) did away with helped people of modest means... guess that ain't your mission in life no more. And since your mission has changed, you should just resign your seat and let someone who desires to help those with modest means do the work that needs to be done. Please Board/CEO don't take this personnel it's just the "cost of doing business", the SECU way, "Doing the Right Thing" that thing momma raised us to do, no matter the cost!

Oh you mean like "Stay above the line"? Guess they didn't REALLY mean it ... actions speak louder than words!

  4. A credit union designed and built over the past 85 years to serve the consumer, the peon taxpayers, the state workers. Now the business model is to rape, pillage and plunder the folks that built the credit union over the past 85 years. The business model has changed, and now commercial business loans for the corporate whores is the new credit union business plan. Seems like Attorney Jo Ann is one of the best paid lobbyists MONEY CAN BUY. Folks its is time to recall the board of directors and replace them with a consumer focus board of directors. We can do this. Let's roll.

  5. Jo Anne Sanford is as good as they get in persuasion. Happens without even being aware that she is persuading you. That makes for a formidable lobbyist which includes lobbying other members of this board for a particular agenda(new/new)!

  7. I dont know where else to say this but i just wanted to point out that as a call center employee in the last month or so i have had an extra 26 work days added to my year, had the effectiveness of my pto reduced to the worst in the entire organization, had my workload increase by ten fold, had my hours changed to later in the day, had my entire schedule completely changed and didn't receive one additional cent in pay. Did not receive anything to compensate for all of this. The call center was by no means perfect before but I never thought someone could come in and make it infinitely worse and in such a short amount of time. The new rumors I just heard that may be coming are screen monitoring or recording, the new (horrible) phone system determining when we are allowed to take a break, and much stricter times when we are allowed to take PTO (i worked to earn that PTO I will use it when I want to thank you). We already had one of the most thankless and tough jobs in the entire organization and it seems as if this new leadership has only one job and that is to beat us down into leaving. There is no other explanation.

    1. They're trying to run it like any other call center without taking into account that most call centers have a terrible reputation and people hate working for them. I don't know how MSS will keep and attract good employees with all the negative changes. That was a problem even before all this happened.

    2. why would they do this? Is there a plan to outsource to India? what other reason would there be to do this?

    3. Whoever wrote this nailed it! As soon as that new schedule was announced I immediately started looking for another job and was happy to find one within the company. I still have many friends and keep in contact with people in the call center and my heart goes out to them. They are so stressed out and now actually hate going into work. I wish there was a way to publish the schedule on here so that people could see what it's like.

    4. just another tactic to get people to leave on their own so they can say, 'we didn't layoff anyone' and 'we will have to outsource since we can't fill the positions'. More than one way to skin a cat (sorry cat lovers, BTW I have one as a pet so don't hate me)!

    5. I’ll tell you the branch’s aren’t any better…. Best to find work elsewhere than within the company at this point. Everyone is miserable and overworked due to the restructure and staffing pause. The only ones not wallowing in misery is FAS and MLO’s, but even they are worried about the future of their jobs… I know they feel bad sitting in their office twiddling their thumbs all day and getting paid about 2x everyone else, which is just absolutely insane. The member service is DECLINING and big time, do you hear me? ITS DECLINING. It’s a PROBLEM. Employees quite frankly don’t care anymore….It would suck to be fired but at least we won’t be worked to death for this tyrant organization who does not listen to its employees and members when they are begging for help

    6. 26 days added a year = so you have to work 40 hours a week now instead of 36…. Welcome. Buckle up because you’re going to be losing sleep and crying in your car at lunch like the rest of us who hate coming into this place now

      Delete
    7. Agree with your input, but this is how it’s been for branch and operation employees for almost a year now. Stressful and busy all day. Once employees find new work, they leave now

      Delete
    8. @8:36. Amen!
It is NOT greener on the other side at the branches. We work from 8:15-5:45 most days M-F but aren’t allowed overtime. If we’re late helping a member, we just get a long lunch the next day. Collections Dept. is an absolute joke. Branches are running the show for them while they hand out extensions.

    9. I need to interject that the answer here is not to tear each other down or compete over who has it worse. Branches and the call center and I assume operations, are ALL facing serious challenges and loss of morale. At least in branches we have been able to keep our schedules. The call center staff already have a job dealing with members who are more willing to be rude and angry than in person. Now, their entire lives have been messed with due to this crazy schedule.

We used to be an organization that valued employees. Focus on the real issues, not your coworkers who are also struggling. We’re all hurting. “Best place to work,” my ***. We used to have the best place to work before the board and outsiders set it all on fire.

Don’t get distracted. Three seats on the board need to flip. There needs to be accountability for all these bad decisions and worse outcomes.

    10. Thank you, I will say I agree and it wasn’t my intent to try and say who had it worse… but just that everyone knows what they are experiencing and can relate, and reminder for those and myself that I’m sure there are others who I’m sure have it so much worse. we are important part of this organization and we are in this together…

    11. Devils advocate here. Perhaps these posters needed a space to be heard. To vent. To be upset and frustrated without fear of retaliation. I agree we need to stand united and @7:22am you gave us a great reminder in doing so. But to the others who shared their frustrations I just want to let you know I hear you. I pity your recent schedule changes. It’s easy for someone who isn’t in your shoes to misunderstand that 4 more hours a week and schedule flips can wreak havoc on daycare, families, vacations, marriages, co-parenting and self achievement goals. To those in the branches feeling like roles were removed from your job descriptions but the work has increased due to staffing levels, I hear you.
These discussions may be off topic but they are very real and valid feelings for employees who inadvertently take it out on the membership. I hope you are not continued to be pushed aside and that your voices are heard. One step at a time. Let’s get our SECU back and build employee satisfaction.

    13. Information Technology is treated like crap also ... when the NEW manager$$ say to "Legacy" employees to 'get on board or get out' after you helped grow SECU that's a tough pill to swallow.
And the way they treated our senior managers ....
these folks are toxic and have brought that environment with them and it's spreading like wild fire!!! Let's just hope the whole place doesn't implode or we will be the next Blockbuster! Maybe that's what they want so somebody will sweep in "save" us and pay the board and
c-suites some money... there has to be money involved somewhere .... there always is... people don't compromise their reputations for nothing.

Sad part is some legacies are playing right along with them singing the same tune and giving regular folks a hard time withoutany conscience for selfish motives. Just sad all around. Very scared and worried about the future.

  8. There’s a saying take care of your employees and the rest will fall into place. Apparently getting to 2nd largest isn’t enough . Now we need to start call monitoring etc. news flash - you don’t have to mimic the industry you CAN do it your way . If it works don’t change it.

This statement is on the website .... do you *Trust "them" to stand behind it, “Do the Right Thing” and not lie to the membership? I'll leave you to watch the video evidence.

  10. don't get off subject too much on employee unhappiness and complaints. Stay focused on the cause of all those complaints. Jo Anne Sanford is at the heart of the new/new, Mr Wooten and Mr Brinson are complicit in their silence--Maybe their hearts are not with the people of modest means and they no longer believe in the NCSECU philosophy and formerly succesfully run business strategies. High interest rates, low loan rates, peer review of rejections for every member. It certainly appears that their hearts are hardened....other wise the members would hear Wooten and Brinson speaking out against the new/new policies and the misinformation spouted by Hayes, Brady, and this board. Hayes would be long gone! Why oh why is he still defiling the offices at NCSECU?

  11. MS. Handford, f you longer believe in the credit union philosophy of people helping people - all members being treated equally - and the belief of working to make members' financial lives better...You do not belong at SECU! You need to go to a bank, another corporate setting, anywhere but here.
You & your ideas are not wanted within our cooperative. As long as there are some legacy actually ve and retired employees, we will not give up, this is more than a job to us, this is our calling. Please resign or prepare to have an all out statewide campaign against You personally & your direction for our beloved SECU in the next two months.

  12. Friend alerted me to this blog. I was around at time of Duke/CPL merger, keep digging plenty of dirt. Don't miss later merger of Piedmont Gas with Duke, who was on Board who cashed out. Readers can get a start here https://mybilljohnsonstory.wordpress.com/ on the muck of CEO Johnson firing with $50 million payout...looks like CU is deja vu all over again...same pocket stuffing, same players. Attempted theft in progress. Look it up.
