Hey, Will This Affect My Credit Score?

😎 How long does a late payment stay on your credit report?

If you make a late payment, it stays on your credit report for a full seven years unless it’s an error. If it is an error, be sure to submit a dispute [I have to submit a dispute to correct your error?] to remove it from your report. After seven years, it’ll drop off your credit report and won’t affect your credit score.

  1. Of course, this was an "in good faith" error on the part of our credit union. Requires no apology or follow up to correct if it is made "in good faith"!

  3. AMEX has a credit score simulator tool. Just checked and if I am late 30 days on just 1 account for 30 days my credit score drops 75 points. That would generally drop most everyone to a lower tier on a risk-based lending system. The 1 late payment remains on the credit report for 7 years. Welcome to the fairness of RBL

    1. Paying over 30 days late should drop your score a lot. Most lenders assess a late fee way before that time. Why is that outrageous? Thirty days past the due date is a LONG time and is one heck of a grace period.

    2. @2.14 You should be blessed with a cushy job, a steady income stream and a stable financial situation. Not everyone is. There are some of us who now have to juggle our monthly budget to handle late fees, realign our budget, cope with unexpected expenses, medical bills, etc. It's always easy to spout logistics when you are not the one caught in the trap, in a position of safety. Please be realistic and empathize with the average membership. To some 'LONG' is really 'SHORT'.

To someone in a low paying hourly job this small late fee throws their whole monthly financials off. Let us not lose our core human values all because a flaw has been exposed.

    3. Why should it "drop my score a lot", especially if the credit score and credit record have been good with SECU for 50 years?

If a creditor makes an error...say by mis-sending a billpay causing a delinquency, why should I have to correct it?...and why if I don't correct it does the error stay on my record for seven years? And SECU (which made the error) then charges me more on all loans, because of their error?!?

And by the way how does a late fee help a member struggling to pay bills? And do you feel its justified to charge a late fee to a long term member with a great credit record who simply forgot. Did you realize that interest continues to accrue whether or not the member is late in paying... so the CU doesn't lose anything.

My experience is that most folks are good and nobody is perfect...but perhaps you're the exception?! Is it difficult being perfect?

  5. Almost 2 decades ago one of my bill pay checks didn't make it out and I got reported to the credit bureaus. I found this out while checking my credit report and called SECU dreading what hoops I have to jump through to get this. It was a very simple, no issue scenario. SECU accepted the responsibility, called the company, explained the situation and faxed them a letter as the first step. The 2nd and last step was they did the same with all 3 credit bureaus. Everything was taken care of in a few hours. I started the day with apprehensions and ended the day as an extreme happy and satisfied member. That was professionalism to the core, providing great value and beyond expectations service.

I don't even want to think about SECU now, leave alone do a comparison. I will this at pathetic, miserable, power hungry and money grabbing non-professional C-suites.

    1. Well, it's not the current crew's fault that you were spoilt by the previous legacies. They weren't smart enough to tell you to review, follow up, keep an eye out, dispute the credit report and suck it up for 7 years if it didn't work.

    7. Original poster here. Didn't mean to cause confusion.

That was purely 100% sarcasm. Vexed and frustrated to have to deal with all this now. Call center said they cannot do anything about it. So need to send the payment directly to the party to avoid late fee and/or getting reported, keep an eye out to see if the messed up check gets cleared, if it does then ask for the money back. Add to that need to shuffle bills around to make up for the additional payment - in case the billpay check clears.

And I get to read the justification and support of the mess without responsibility with a "Why is that outrageous? Thirty days past the due date is a LONG time and is one heck of a grace period." comment.

When is the new crew going to step up to the plate, take responsibility for their disastrous decisions / actions and own up to them and make things right? They are only digging their heels more strongly. Their ego is costing the members dearly. Too much pride and ego doesn't serve anyone, even them.

The so called 'legacies' are indeed leaving a good legacy behind. What do these drifters have to leave? Destruction and chaos.

  13. SECU used to provide stellar customer service and member care. It grew every year for 85 years without any marketing.

The new SECU has a whole marketing department, loses money, and tells the member to figure it out. Is that the strategic plan?

  14. Member: Wrong Ink? What the what happened???

SECU: You go figure it out.

    31 days later...

Member: I need a loan to buy a car.

SECU: Great! It'll just cost you 1% more now because we hired a vendor who doesn't know which ink to use and you didn't have time to figure it out.

Member: Wait, where did you get the money to pay that vendor?

    SECU: You!

  17. This is truly showing the flaws in Leigh’s leadership. Now let’s talk about that career path that front line employees have been waiting for over a year now with no pay increases or promotions. You think these career paths affect the executive level? Nope. They will create brand new positions out of thin air. Remember when we had no Associate EVPs or Sr Associate EVPs? These look like positions that were created for Bombastic to bring over his First Citizens terrorists and plague the credit union.

  18. I contacted a local government that my water/sewer payment was sent to via bill pay check. I also explained many others may be affected by the same issue so I wanted to provide a heads up. They were empathetic but asked a simple question, "Why can SECU not reach out to affected parties and tell them directly?" I wasn't sure how to answer that so I went with I don't know why. Sad.

What is my local branch or call center going to do? Sounds like this person has totally shrugged off their complete incompetence onto the membership. and that Leigh Brady and This Board are AOK with it.
