Alice Garland Is In "An Unusal Situation" - Got That Part Right At Least!

http://hdguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/oops-580.jpg Alice Garland is one of the SELF-PERPETUATING NOMINEES for the SECU Board. As you can see from this morning's email below, Ms. Garland finds herself in an "unusual situation" - being held accountable by the SECU membership. Evidently, Ms. Garland doesn't like that! https://secuvote.ey.com/

😎 From: Alice Garland
Subject: NC State Employees Credit Union Board
Date: August 31, 2023  AM EDT
To: "xxxxxx"
I am in an unusual situation and I am requesting your help.
You may not know that I am Vice Chair of the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Board of Directors. In October, I am slated to become the chair. Three board members are up for reelection – Jo Ann Sanford, Thomas Parrish and myself. For the first time in decades, this will be a contested election.

A former SECU CEO is working hard to unseat the three of us. Much of his campaign is the spread of misinformation, and quite frankly, untruths. **** He has 1) painted the three of us as really bad people who need to be removed from the Board. He has made it clear that he is unhappy with the forward-looking changes that the board is making, including: 2) updating IT; 3) instituting more digital options; 4) adding tier-based lending which is the standard among credit unions; 5) and more.

Consequently, I am asking (if you are an SECU member) for you to vote for the three of us.

Second, I am asking that you 6) spread the word about this election among family, co-workers, neighbors and friends.

This is a really important election. We likely will need upwards of 10,000 member votes to remain on the board. May I count on your help?

NOTE: Beginning tomorrow, September 1, and through October 3, you can vote online.

I sincerely appreciate your support and your vote. I wish you the very best.

Alice Garland

😎 Some thoughts on Ms. Garland's email:

**** Can't say for sure who "the former CEO" is but I'm pretty sure Ms. Garland means Mike Lord  (could be wrong...😎)

1) Believe Mike Lord's critique of Ms. Garland and the SECU Board has not been about "bad people", but about "bad judgment". SECU's performance over the last 2 years seems to support Mr. Lord's point!  https://secuvote.ey.com/

2) "unhappy about updating IT" - believe Mike Lord has supported updating IT , but has strongly objected to the now ex-CEO lying in the Triangle Business Journal about no tech changes at SECU "since 1983". Ms. Garland remained silent in support of that lie which is probably why "the former CEO" got angry. https://secuvote.ey.com/

3) "unhappy with more digital options" - can't find any reference, anywhere that Mike Lord is opposed to more digital options - neither can Ms. Garland! https://secuvote.ey.com/

4)  "adding tiered-based lending" - Yes, Mike Lord is against race-based lending, red-lining, and unfair discrimination .  One would have hoped Ms. Garland was too. https://secuvote.ey.com/

5) "and more."....  yes, there are many signs of bad judgment at work with Ms. Garland on the Board.

6) "among family, co-workers, neighbors, and friends" -  Ms. Garland might want to review and update who is on her email list!

😎 [Not sure "The Duck" should be a first recipient, Ms. Garland.]

  6. Tier based lending is "the standard among credit unions." So was red lining by the banks. So the aspiration is for SECU to be standard. not better. Below standard in many areas. Tier based lending hurts state employees. Teachers, school bus drivers, department of transportation employees, prison employees, university system employees, community college employees, and all their families. Is Alice Garland willing to cosign loans for state employees so that they can get her rate? SECU thrived for 85 years treating members equally. Is it thriving under the current leadership?

  12. "We likely will need upwards of 10,000 member votes to remain on the Board." I hate to break it to Ms Alice but she might want to brush up on her math skills if she thinks 10,000 votes will give her that Chairman of the Board Seat she so desires. You think she may still be California dreamin...

  14. Ms. Garland may have just been reminded by the always present Fate - the lessons those Mamas always taught us is true - you can't do wrong and get by with it - cause the time will come when you will make a mistake - like not checking the names on the recipient line before you hit send...

  20. I remember reading a comment made very early on by Chris Ayer, (the good one, the SECU IT guy) about how This Board made himself and others on the Executive Team feel in Board Meetings those last months prior to Mr. Lord's retirement.
Kudos to Chris and the Others for their accurate perceptions of just where This Board was headed. Time and This Board's actions have given all Members a very clear picture of what we do not want for our credit union. Time for a change - September 1, this Family will be voting for Perkins, Clements and Stone.

Nope, you accomplished that all by yourself, Alice.

  22. so, looks like Garland thinks you are both, Lord and Blaine, spreading "untruths" Wonder what Garland thinks isn't true? The regulator had to make this board stop hiding their financials from the members. This board seems to have some trouble following the law and the rules. Changing things as they go.... Wait til y'all see the memo sent out today by Brady! Gonna be some new rules on voting procedures coming next I bet!

  24. Life gives us choices, We can be a part of the problem or we can be a part of the solution.
SECU's problem for the past two years is the credit union has been plagued by one bad Board Decision after another.
Garland, Handford and Parrish are a part of that problem. Part of the solution will be to elect Stone, Perkins and Clements, for a return to the credit union philosophy and SECU values.

  25. She really has no clue and the misinformation ion the email proves it. She and the others showed their cards two years ago. We (employees) used to revere the board, now they are hated, just like their choice of CEO, CRO, CIO and most of the other C's, E's and the arrogant, Legacy hating SVP's they brought in. Luckily its only a matter of time before most of them walk.

Alice, you failed. Time to move on. Find another financial institution to destroy.

  26. In reference to Ms Garland's email - "for the first time in decades, this will be a contested election." Could that be, because for the first time in decades SECU is losing on the bottom line? Correction - 86 years - not decades. SECU's bottom line has survived and thrived through many hard economic times, recessions and a very recent pandemic. But This Board removed the concept of Thrift from their decision making for SECU and now These Board Members need to be replaced by Others who will be better stewards of our money. Cast your votes for the Members' Nominated Candidates and let's get SECU back on the right track for everyone.

  27. Alice invited Jim Hayes(remember him 6 million dollar man?) to speak at the Raleigh Kiwanis club where he proceeded to lie. No New technology since 1983! which EVERYONE, including Alice, knows is a BIG lie. what did Alice say? Nothing. Who was the main push behind hiring Jim Hayes. Wrecker of financial institutions? biggest losses ever in credit union history on his head. And on Alice's (along with 5 others--you know who you are!) for bringing him to our formerly best in the USA credit union. Kiss her goodby and make it great again!!

  30. So long Alice! You and your fellow board members lost my votes with your hiring of Jim Hayes and throwing away over Six Million just to bring him to our state. And shame on all of you for sticking us with risk based lending rates. SECU has always given me better than industry standard and I know Perkins, Stone and Clements will get our credit union going back in the right direction

  34. "Unhappy with updating IT". What a joke.

Let's add some truth and background to this nightmare.

As Mike Lords term came to a close, Information Services was poised to do whatever was asked. No one pretended our systems were the most modern, everyone agreed upgrades were overdue. We had to beg for every position the three years leading up to this fiasco and we were forced to do to everything with in-house talent so would have had to choose the direction wisely (strangely, after two years of Bomba's false promises they are finally trying to choose wisely).

Not only did we position SECU to thrive through Covid, but we did it while moving to two new data centers and while fighting months and months of the most advanced Denial of Service attacks ever attempted at SECU AND making hundreds of enhancements, upgrades, and other never ending changes.

We saved them millions by building the Consumer Loan Point Of Sale in-house, in spite of Josh Bomba who now takes credit but everyone knows he stopped it several times because he didnt trust the SECU developers. It has been a huge success in spite of that a$$hole.

Lets give credit where credit is due.
Josh Bomba is now 2 years behind where we were on Core replacement and that's with the 200+ new people Leigh and company has encouraged him to hire. His lies and inuendo fed in to Jim Hayes underestimating the complexity and Leigh Brady was right there cheering them along.

The board turned their back on us two years ago. Its time we return the favor.

Looks like Bomba's skill set begin and end with creating a power point and purchasing 8,000 laptops.

  36. As an employee, no employees object to better technology. It should not be a surprise to Ms. Garlamd or her fellow members of “This Board” that we want accountability for two years of terribly decisions that have wreaked havoc and cost us untold legacy talent and experience.

I don’t care what the “standard” is because we historically performed in a league of our own. I don’t want be average and settle for the status quo.

    1. Amen! I was going to comment that just because others are doing it doesn’t make RBL the right thing to do for our members. However paying more than 1% on money market and 2.25% on IRA’s like most other financial institutions is not being addressed. What previous Board and management decisions prevent the SECU to do what most financial institutions are doing in that area?

  37. After reading Ms Garland's email last night, I was led to rewatch the SECU Annual Meeting 2022 as well as the SECU 75th Anniversary video. Three points I would like to make that was very clear to me after watching these videos.
    1. Her email accuses one of SECU's retired CEOs of spreading untruths about the present SECU Board. I find her statement very troubling about whichever gentleman she was referring, because in her statement I could not find any truth. Jim Blaine stood before all present and addressed concerns for SECU's future on behalf of Members, Employees and Himself. Mike Lord is on the record in print as to his attempts to reach this Board and avoid the damage and costly mistakes "They" have made over the past two years. This Board was given an opportunity from that day forward to listen to the Membership and realign their thoughts and decision making to coincide with what Member/Owners wanted from their credit union. The truth is This Board did not take heed, they continued to pursue Their own agenda.
    2. I don't know of many SECU Members who would not feel a sense of pride and humility when watching the 75th Anniversary video. Real Members and Real Volunteers speaking their words of truth about all SECU means to them and the difference this credit union has made in their lives.
    3. I completed my viewing thinking about a statement/question made in a presidential campaign years ago...and I asked myself: Is SECU better off today than it was four years ago? Because my answer was a clear No, I will be voting today for Perkins, Clements and Stone.
With my hopes they will return SECU back to the credit union being spoken about on the 75th Anniversary video.
