SECU Board Elections - 2023: Encouraging Advisory Boards To Watch "The Real Thing"...

Dear Member Advisory Board Volunteers,

The Annual Membership Meeting and Board of Directors Election was held Tuesday, October 10 in Greensboro, North Carolina. We had over 1,000 members in attendance and many more who watched the live stream or recorded video available on YouTube. While the entire meeting was over 2 hours and may be a stretch to watch, I would encourage you to at least view the "Member Forum" time stamp 1:28.50 [link] through  2:33:02, as it provides information on various important topics at our credit union, as well as confirms for you and the membership our focus areas in the 2023-24 fiscal year are not supported by the majority of members.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ernst and Young provided the tabulated results from all absentee and in-person voting for the Board Election. The following newly elected member-nominated Board members have begun serving their initial term through October 2026:

  • Michael Clements
  • Barbara Perkins
  • Chuck Stone

  1. I just watched a you tube video interview titled Jim Blaine, State Employees Credit Union. It is an interview on the show Carolina Business Review. This interview was 10 years ago. Every member should watch this! It is so enlightening to hear this and then consider where our organization is going today and why it is so important to to continue to fight for our core values!

  2. “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?"

'They' (the old board members/CEO's formed at the hip) have shown no change of heart ... so expect more of the same until that day...

Do you think this board has your best interest at heart for the members/owners of NCSECU when setting policy?

    1. no! they don't feel it is necessary to listen to the members. They have hijacked the CU for their own interests.

  4. How much income will SECU lose when LGFCU moves away? What else will happen because of this move? Why wouldn't SECU make it worth LGFCUs worthwhile to stay with us?

  5. I was initially against your meddling in the board and Jim Hayes decisions thinking you had your time as CEO now let them decide the future direction of SECU. But as a former SECU employee, retired credit union CEO and current SECU member I began reading your blog with great interest as you revealed the things going on and lack of transparency. I was frankly appalled at some of the things I learned. While I don’t agree with your opinions on everything you characterized as wrong that has been implemented I am glad Jim Hayes is gone. Never met him but he sounds untrustworthy. I once held the SECU board of directors in high esteem but have changed my opinion and voted for the” member-nominated” candidates with the hopes that they can bring SECU back to a member-owned cooperative. I worked for a divided board for several years and know how difficult it can be to get things done so I will caution folks not to expect overnight changes. I also hope that Leigh can be given the opportunity to show what she really believes philosophically now that she is the CEO and doesn’t have to support Hayes’ initiatives. Not that you and the purists among former employees will agree with everything she does. You always liked a healthy debate so you can blog about them.
I am glad that Jean got you off the sidelines to bring things to light. Always knew she was the brains of the outfit. Just kidding!

    1. For those who don't know Steve Harkins, he was a highly skilled and successful CEO of a high performing credit union in Greenville, SC. As to his comments: Steve, you're right that I have no right to "meddle" as a former CEO, but I hope I do still have the right to "meddle" as a member-owner of SECU. I retired from the job at SECU, but I did not retire from life! And, yes you've always known where the brains and most fiery passion were in our family - I've never been the principle problem!

Hope you and yours are well!

    4. You know I was not the quickest study so it took me a little while to see why you and others needed to meddle. 😄 After reading your posts yesterday I certainly see the need to continue strongly voicing your concerns as Leigh and the remaining board aren’t listening. Fight on JCB-this SECU member now fully appreciates it.

    5. Someone had to have the courage to stand up for our membership and credit union philosophy! There's a lot of history in people afraid to 'Do the Right Thing' and we have witnessed the rot and destruction in brings. And who gets hurt the most?
Those who have the least ... because nobody really cares if they get squashed in the mighty and powerful machine of greed!
