Is It Worth It? Second Thoughts?

 https://i1.wp.com/www.edklaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/On-Second-Thought-e1398055677773.jpg

Before we get started working on the "What next" on H. 410?, thought it might be helpful to recall the "What and  Why?" we're here.

 "The What"

Please take a minute to have another look at the April 11, 2023 post ["Pause to Update"]. You can find it by scrolling down the right side and clicking on that date in "Archives" or by clicking on the "About" button in the white line above. Really, do take a quick second look.

Of course, you have to add an extra year to the timeline - go back to September, 2021 when the change in direction/culture started at SECU. The concerns that were expressed in the Annual Meeting Resolution appear to be valid and growing. Pursuing these matters takes a lot of time, creates a lot of tension and frustration, is no fun at all...and will not get easier. Second thoughts?

"The Why"

Over the last 85 years, SECU was defined by the needs of its individual members in North Carolina. Those needs were pretty basic - help with making sound financial decisions, provided by people the members could trust to "Do the Right Thing" - always. That "Strategic Plan" seemed to work well. The "Members First" approach led to many non-industry standard products and services - "There [Was] A Difference" - intentionally. And, here is what that difference looked like ...[link....SECU beginnings]. Too old-fashioned, too quaint, too out-of-touch, too different? Second thoughts?

... not going to get easier, may require folks to stand up and be counted. You do realize that means you, don't you?

Second thoughts?

  1. Every employee should be made to watch this. Especially Haze and the BOD. This is my credit union. not the one of today. This brought chills just watching. This is why I was proud to say I worked at SECU. This is what SECU is all about. Not this crap that's going on now

  2. SECU's culture of doing the right thing being trashed, members being taken advantage of by terrible changes like Risk Based Lending, the Credit Union's reputation being ruined by a Board that has lost the vision of what SECU stands for, the loss of member's trust, and legacy employees being treated like unwanted visitors - no, it's not going to get easier but worth every ounce of energy we have to oppose what this Board and CEO are doing and to stand up for what is right.

  6. hmmm Not so much in his new iteration! Risk based lending, doing away with loan review committee, etc etc. sounds like he's become a banker tome

  7. Welp. Employees already have an email of 'ol Jimmy Haze and Airz supporting H.410. Yay.

  8. Jimmy sent out an email with Chris Ayers name at the bottom on why SECU is supportive of H. 410. Doesn't mention about corporations which is in the bill. Wonder why.

  9. Dumb*** in chief just sent out an email along with having a Chris Ayers Signature at the end of it. One point I would like to notate on his email “This bill also grants supervision and enforcement authority to state credit union regulators and provides narrow guidance for credit union governance that protects democratic cooperative principles of member control and keeps credit unions accountable to their core missions. Suggestions that these changes displace the voice of the membership or give credit unions freedom to Murrow banks and pursue unbridled growth are incorrect.” If they weren’t correct, you wouldn’t have to send out weak emails with the chair of the BOD signature on it. Our memberships voice has already been lost. You’ve ignored their letters, complaints…and most importantly you’ve ignored the voices on this blog and will do everything to minimize the power this blog has had over you. You may succeed Mr. Hayes, but you will have to drag all of us down with you because we aren’t going out without a fight. We will make this harder on you.

  10. Gym Haze with another spineless email attempting to defend his weak stances of H410. The comedy show at SECU continues.

    1. No second thoughts here! It’s our responsibility to put in the work to take SECU back to “There IS a difference.” Don’t slow down now.

  12. Since entering the state of North Carolina, SECU's CEO Hayes along with his Board have torn their credit union all to pieces. I am certainly not trusting them to do what is best for my community credit union - defeat HB 410.

  13. What SECU was before September 2021 and what SECU is now April 2023 - the decline in leadership, values, culture, services and atmosphere can't be described as a new direction - this ocean liner (Brinson) has been steered way off course. Too much at stake to let this ship sink.

  14. Most intelligent persons would have gotten the message at the 2022 Annual Meeting - all these significant changes to SECU are not being received well by the membership or the employees. Not Haze & Company, they were too determined to remake SECU and make a name for themselves. And they have, but it's not a good name. As the resistance has grown to their new direction, they are now desperate...and desperate people do desperate things. One thought to ponder: with each new policy change, with each new consulting group, with each new outside hire to the upper management slots - they continue to chip away at our credit union. We have no choice in this matter, SECU must be protected from those seeking to destroy what she has been for 86 years. Annual Meeting 2023 - we're taking our credit union back!
