13 Reasons Why Herb Kelleher Was One Of The Greatest Leaders Of Our Time...
1. "We have a strategic plan -- it's called doing things."
2. "Your people come first, and if you treat them right, they'll treat the customers right."
3. "The essential difference in service is not machines or 'things.' The essential difference is minds, hearts, spirits, and souls."
4. "You don't hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach skills."
5. "A company is stronger if it is bound by love rather than by fear."
6. "Think small and act small, and we'll get bigger. Think big and act big, and we'll get smaller."
7. "I learned it by doing it, and I was scared to death."
8. "Just because you don't announce your plan doesn't mean you don't have one."
9. "I forgive all personal weaknesses except egomania and pretension."
10. "The business of business is people."
11. "If you create an environment where the people truly participate, you don't need control. They know what needs to be done and they do it."
12. "Leading an organization is as much about soul as it is about systems. Effective leadership finds its source in understanding."
13) "If you're crazy enough to do what you love for a living, then you're bound to create a life that matters." [Some folks never "get it"]

YES!!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you didn’t write these?😄 It’s what we were all taught as “Legacy” employees! And there is no doubt we were proud to serve and did so very successfully! Don’t give up, keep doing the right thing!
ReplyDeletePowerful words and the truth!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how well this philosophy worked at Southwest and SECU. Too bad this board doesn't understand the monetary value of a personal relationship. Treating people right makes them wildly loyal, they will always come to you and bring friends, and yes, their mommas! And it is so easy. Every member is an A+ paper person. Treat them that way!
ReplyDeleteCompare with Brady's "SECU Strategic Pile". Wear your boots.
ReplyDeleteWe see how Southwest is doing now ... Their #1 on the list is excuses ... sounds a lot like our #1 now...
ReplyDeleteI love this! Truly words to live by, and all the "strategic plan" you really need. Thanks Mr. B!
ReplyDeleteThank you- as a legacy employee that is the way we were trained- the result- 85 yrs of building a wonderful place to work and treating members by "Doing the Right Thing"! Lead by example and this Executive team has not grasped that concept and some have caved to new leadership.
ReplyDeleteNew Strategic Plan, 'My Way or the Highway'
ReplyDeleteWeird that Kelleher didn't mention hiring a bunch of consultants and doing what they say...
ReplyDeleteBoards hire consultants when they don't know what to do or have weak management. In this case both.
ReplyDelete... or so they have someone to blame when they lose 4 billion and the Fed lie falls flat (see previous chart).
DeleteSee #8. Just because you do announce your plan, doesn't mean you have one.
ReplyDelete"In looking for people to hire, look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you."
