SECU Board Elections 2025: It Could Have Been Worse...

On July 11, 2025 the Nominating Committee for the SECU Board elections in 2025 released its slate of four candidates [link]. The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Chuck Stone, outlined the selection process and emphasized: "The Nominating Committee is encouraged by the level of candidate engagement and participation in this year’s election."

The selected slate included two incumbent board members and two who were recruited by the Board, including one former board member. Two incumbents chose not to seek reelection.

The news release also noted that: "All prospective candidates were then invited to interview with the Nominating Committee; all prospective candidates accepted the invitation".

As you will recall, there was a little riff concerning the announcement of election procedures this year [link], with several interested candidates missing the earlier filing deadline. The NC Credit Union Division, however, ruled that SECU may continue to do as it pleases in terms of the Annual Meeting.

Thought it was interesting to note how another prominent, statewide North Carolina non-profit notified members of an upcoming board election and even invited members to apply!:

...  granted it is UNC-CH, which makes it suspect for some readers!

Mr. Stone, the Chair of the SECU Nominating Committee, when asked the number of "all prospective candidates" who had applied seemed reluctant at first to reply. But, did finally acknowledge that there was only one other applicant beyond the four recruited.

"The Nominating Committee is encouraged by the level of candidate engagement and participation in this year’s election.". One potential independent candidate out of 2.8 million SECU members?

😎 Well, It could have been worse ...!!

... could it?

  1. Why didn’t the self-nominating cabdurates run again this year?

  2. 10:03 Several interested candidates missed the filing deadline that had changed this year. The only notification to members of election procedures for 2025 was an unannounced posting on a back page of the website... no email, no social media, no alert, no branch posting, no news release,

The SECU Board has changed candidate qualification standards to require an application through the nominating committee... no such requirement can be found in the bylaws. The application package runs over 25 pages and is purposefully intimidating to members.- easier to apply to Harvard!

The SECU Board would like to give the impression that the nominating committee "qualifies" candidates to run. In fact, the only limitation in the bylaws is that the candidate be a member in over 18 and willing to serve.

Even under the adverse nominating package restrictions, any member in good standing who submits an application is qualified to run.

  3. It absolutely galls me that McKinley Wooten continues as a member of the board. If I can figure out the stopwatch feature I'm going to track the amount of time he spends playing on his phone at the Annual Meeting.

    1. 3:19 so you did you step up and nominate yourself to lead, or are you too scared or intimidated to fill out a few forms? Saw a post that the CU is run by cowards. True cowards are people like you - hopefully not a member, that complain, have no clue what they’re taking about, and never take action.

    2. 3:19. Did you even vote in the election last year?

    3. Wait, so I'm the coward? You post this pious retort anonymously and I'm the coward? As to your questions, I serve on an advisory board and I voted, as did my entire family, in the election last year.

  4. The packages get posted and we’ve seen them. Not intimidating, or absolutely shouldn’t be for someone who wants to be a director for a 55+ billion institution.

    4. The package was posted when the notice of election / meeting came out. Taken down, now of course, since the deadline passed.

  5. Being in good standing and over 18, makes you eligible, not qualified. There is a huge difference

    1. Where can members find the criteria used to determine if a candidate is qualified? It would help future candidates know how the Nominating Committee makes its choices.
Granted it's pretty easy when no one applies.

    2. Qualifications are kind of a common sense thing.

    3. Were the 3 self-nominated directors in 2023 qualified?
