SECU: Sliding Down The Slippery Slope to "New/New" Industry Standard?

... or "Drive-Away"!

😎 Oops!

NBCNews [2/10/2025]: "McDonald’s U.S. business reported a steeper-than-expected drop in its same-store sales. Same-store sales at the company’s domestic restaurants fell 1.4% in the quarter; Wall Street was projecting same-store sales declines of 0.6%. [Check out a unicorn performance! - link]

McDonald’s said traffic was slightly positive, but customers spent less than usual during the quarter. Over the summer, the chain rolled out a $5 combo meal to bring back price-conscious diners and reverse sluggish sales. The strategy worked, helping McDonald’s U.S. same-store sales tick up in the third quarter.

✅ "However, analysts have warned that value meals only work if customers also add menu items that aren’t discounted to their orders.

😎 Keep that last comment in mind whenever we (finally!) look at those long promised New/New - "whoo-who ?" - industry standard rewards cards!

... fast food for thought?

  2. "Nah, I’m afraid it don’t work that way. You can’t let a young ‘un decide for himself. He’ll grab at the first flashy thing with shiny ribbons on it, then when he finds out there’s a hook in it, it’s too late. The wrong ideas come packaged with so much glitter it’s hard to convince him that other things might be better in the long run, and all a parent can do is say, “Wait. Trust me,” and try to keep temptation away."

    1. Yes, they are coming very soon. Has been one of the most asked for products. Will offer a points card, cash back card, and the classic card.

  5. To quote Tony the tiger, rewards cards are greatttt, as long as you like taking advantage of less educated and poor people. That's what a credit union is about, right?

Instead rushing this to market years after everyone else, secu should have explained to the limited number of members asking for a rewards card why they're a horrible product.

what's the credit union offering, 4% rewards? If I give them a $100 bill, they're giving me 4 $1 bills back? You mean if I spend a hundred dollars, I can get a free happy meal, which also comes with a free toy? HOLY CRAP!!

Who is paying for my free $4? Where does that money come from? less educated, poor people, who can't afford to pay the balance off each month? oh well, they probably deserve it. All that matters is I get a free happy meal for every $100 I spend. If that's not winning, what is?

    1. So what exactly are you suggesting? Responsible people shouldn't be allowed to have rewards cards because some people mismanage them? You have to be an adult to get a credit card. No one is being forced to get a rewards card. What exactly is the issue here?

  6. Garbage product that takes advantage of poor, less educated people so you can get a free happy meal. We got it, you're one of those who thinks race based lending fine as well. You should do business with a banknot a credit union, whose purpose is supposed to be for the betterment of people.

    1. @10:06. you realize interchange income is already one of our largest non-interest income components, right? if we get a rewards card, granted two decades late, and our members start using them, we get interchange income, which is good for the cooperative. and, not everyone pays their card off each month, so we can get more balances from our own members that are sitting on someone else's balance sheet earning interest income. get educated on the economics and don't believe everything you see on the internet. poor people aren't subsidizing the rich people. and, I guess, if they were, it's a payback for all those years A tier members paid higher rates to subsize the losses from all the C-E tier members.
