The Eclipse Of North Carolina Credit Unions? - Part 2

To: The North Carolina Credit Union Commission

       April 9, 2024

My name is Susie Ford and I have been a member of SECU for over 50 years and was an employee of SECU from 1982 until 1995.  My heart and compassion are strong for SECU after working for 15 years for its members and  my grandfather Joseph C Knox was one of the original founders of the Credit Union as passbook number 7.  So SECU runs deep within me.

On Thursday July 27, 2023 I sent an email to board.corporate.secretary@ncsecu.org addressed to Ms. Funderburk requesting a copy of the official self-nominating petition to submit my name as a candidate for an SECU Board seat.  I received a reply the same day stating “Since you did not submit a completed Candidate Package before the deadline for the current year, you will not be eligible for self-nomination.”

In the past two years, I believe it has become increasingly difficult for SECU Members to participate in the election process.  My understanding was the only bylaws restriction for the Board was to be 18 years old and a member.  However, according to the email I received, the election procedures effectively amend the bylaws requiring me to have filed an application with the Nominating Committee to even be eligible to run.  My thoughts are this change amends the SECU Bylaws as it was never approved by the CU Administrator?  If my thoughts are correct, then the Board could independently add limitations to nomination eligibility and exclude anyone they choose without restraint OR adherence to the SECU bylaws.

My concern is this exclusion of an eligible member to run for a board position is an action with no authority and is an effort to circumvent a fair election process without authority or concern for member “owners’ rights.

Did Kristina Ray fully execute her responsibilities as Credit Union Administrator or stand by and not address the disregard of bylaws by the SECU Board?   The answer is no she did not. How can the CU Commission stand by and not correct the failure of the CU Administrator to carry out her required duties and responsibilities?

The credit unions, administrator and commission are set up as governing bodies for a reason.  I believe you will DO THE RIGHT THING and place responsibilities and authorities where they lie and follow the proper procedures to be within the authorities when changes are made.

The future of our Credit Unions depends on YOU!

Does the N.C. Credit Union Commission agree that eligible members of state-chartered credit unions may be excluded from self-nomination for a board position?

  1. Do you expect the commission will address your concerns while the meeting is in process?

  2. By the way the new SECU Can is not inclusion. As a white middle age male I am excluded from this group. This is discrimination!

    1. Not sure what "SECU Can" is but thought I'd see what comments it brings. The overt, in your face discrimination of risk-based lending was initially the #1 complaint against the Legacy SECU Board. So, nothing new in that idea, except there are now numerous competing #1 concerns about how the SECU Board and senior leadership operates. Keep focused on operational misadventures, soaring costs, declining service levels, non-market rates and the dismantling of a highly regarded, high quality staff.

    2. SECU CAN be divisive. SECU employees were asked to join a group of similar employees; Women, African American, Military, Seniors, Latino, Asian, and LGBTQ. Sure were a lot groups listed but not 1 for several thousand employees. What happened to SECU treating everyone fair and equal? RBL, voting changes, too much specialization, private but not confidential surveys, and now segregating employees by race and gender. We CAN and SHOULD DO BETTER!

    4. Completely agree @2:48. May sound good in theory but just another way to create Tribes and divide people. - just like Risk Based Lending has unknowingly pitted classes of members against each other.

    5. they have become like the world, followers of the chief liar ... SECU is done ... too much damage to repair. You have to fight to stay true, they folded like a cheap tent. No courage from any of the leaders from SECU or those who are responsible to oversee .... JMO

  5. I was fortunate to have Susie Knox Ford as a lending officer in my early years as a manager in Winston Salem. She was a delightful, intelligent, warm person; a favorite of our members and was always ready to use the tools SECU provided to assist members in need. I only found out about her pedigree after months of working with her. To this day just hearing her name makes me smile! I am all in should she seek a spot on the SECU Board of Directors this year. 2. Did she work for the state as well? Feel very strongly that members of the board should have ties to state government or school systems. That’s why this board went rogue. No loyalty to state smployees

    6. How many members will this policy impact? anyone know? Not that a number that some one else determined with sometimes faulty data should exclude any member immediately. The stories need to be heard. The right to appeal should also be reinstated. This is not yet a bank unless HB410 get passed in the short session. Although the Brady Bunch is running our credit union like a bank. Four more in 24!

    1. So? That sounds like a comment by one who believes members should not know what is going on at their credit union. Members need to know more about the lending policies than they do. Not less! Post all the tiers and rates on the website so the member knows BEFORE applying for the loan. SECU could even add that if you are young, a woman or black you will pay a higher rate---well just because...we have a DEI policy?

    3. @7:51 We can only hope LOTS of members read this blog! Personally, I hope the membership visits this blog, regularly, and they see that a lot of us are fighting like hell to keep SECU the BEST credit union - period.

  12. "Does the N.C. Credit Union Commission agree that eligible members of state-chartered credit unions may be excluded from self-nomination for a board position?"

Yes! yes I think they do else they would stop it ...
The whole we can't do anything is a blatant lie.
This is what the love of money and power does to a person/organization, it corrupts their soul and they no longer see right from wrong ... When you sell your soul you have nothing left, you have become an empty shell.
All the money/power in the world can't make you whole and you become a lonely soul in a crowded room.
    So sad for all involved...

  13. These folks must ruin everything. They are consumed with power and wealth and the only enjoyment they get is from shaking you down. They are small and insecure people, who seem to need increasing power as a compensation for their inadequacy.
