SECU What Next? Prohibiting SECU Members From Spreaking..

 https://image3.slideserve.com/6493621/the-gag-rule-l.jpg   Don't worry, be happy!

"If you'll just shut up, this slavery thing will all blow over." (US Congress, 1836)

😎 Several commenters ask:  "What's the problem with the SECU Board prohibiting members from speaking?

Anonymous June 8, 2025 at 10:34AM : So how is the business at risk when members aren’t allowed to speak at the annual meeting?

Anonymous June 8, 2025 at 11:35 AMIt’s not at risk in anyway whatsoever. That was just another hyperbolic, unsupported statement that lobbed out there. This repeated question would be answered if it weren’t.

✅  Would it bother you if you weren't allowed to speak at your local government meetings? At your local Board of Education meetings? At town hall meetings of your state and federal representatives? At convocations of your church?

😎 What exactly is the risk to SECU of continuing the core democratic principle of free speech at the credit union?

Kinda makes you want to gag doesn't it!

"Why does the SECU Board fear the members?"

  1. No it wouldn’t bother me. So what’s the answer to your own question? What is the problem with prohibiting speaking at the annual meeting? I can’t think of one. Free speech is not a democratic principle. It’s a constitutional right and those aren’t the same thing. Constitution doesn’t guaranty you a time and place to speak, unfortunately.

    1. I question your resource(s) as it pertains to democratic principles. You must have missed reading that part.

    2. 6:55pm You're failing civics in terms of government; corporate governance in terns of fiduciary responsibility; justice in terms of the law; and ethics in terms of civil society.

There are names for systems and labels for people who believe others should not be permitted to speak freely - none of which you'd like!

    3. Never said people shouldn’t have freedom to spiral freely. It’s a constitutional right. Said I am not bothered if I don’t personally have a chance to speak at a town hall. Bottom line - speaking at a credit union annual meeting is not a legal right.

    5. 9 35. Not all about me. There was a question asked: “would it bother you”? I answered the question as asked. How is it all about me? I don’t think people have to answer the question the way I did.

You should think through these things before you post.

    6. Why are you posting comments generated by a stupid version of AI?

    11. Working on it, it’ll be done in less than half the time it took to get a simple, worthless mobile app.

    12. What makes the mobile app worthless? I love it. Glad secu got onboard with what us members want.

    13. LOL, been working on it for 4 + years ... and you still ended up getting mainframes ... this is what's known in the industry as an 'ID I0 T' error code ...

  2. So are you going to answer the question? What’s the business risk?

  3. The risk is that a small minority could pack the annual meeting to bring and pass a motion that is not the will of the majority of members. That would be against democratic principles.

    1. 9:43pm Has never happened at SECU! The resolution in 2022 did not have any operational mandates and was passed without objection from the Board - even with a sitting board member seconding the motion!

The ousting of incumbent Board members in 2023 was the result of an open, online/absentee ballot/in person statewide democratic vote.

The request from Mr. Hawes was that any resolution be submitted in advance of the meeting and included on the ballot for all SECU members to voice their opinions on the governance of SECU.

Why would the SECU Board and ELT prohibit the members being heard on the governance of their credit union?
No other credit unions are allowed to do this.

    2. 9 43. Exactly. That’s exactly why the rules need to change. For some companies, resolutions that meet certain conditions are allowed in advance. There is no requirement or law that requires companies to allow resolutions at an annual meeting.

    3. 9:43pm Hate to doubt you, but you're wrong. Check with other credit unions. Only SECU has completely gagged its members from speaking at an annual meeting.

Ignoring the law may not bother you, but following the law is important to most people.

    4. 8 58 You're flat out making that up. How can you support that statement, that "only" SECU has completely gagged its members? So you have personal knowledge of 4500 credit union by laws? I don't support ignoring laws. I don't know support being ignorant of them, either. Which is what you are.

Please simply cite the source of the law that requires members of credit unions to speak at annual meetings and you can prove me wrong. I'll happily admit it.

    5. The rules were changed out of necessity to prevent one member from hijacking a meeting, and the getting useless resolutions passed.

Will say it again. There will never be a meeting like 2022 or 2023 ever again. Every lever, power, angle, procedure and process available will be used to prevent that.

      Delete
    6. 9:46 am Seem to overlook that the 2022 resolution was passed with support from the members and board with no expressed opposition - none! Take a look at the meeting video. Do you mean to critcize the Board for helping "hijack" the 2022 meeting?

And are you saying that the the members who ousted the incumbents in 2023 in a 30 day statewide election "hijacked" that meeting?

Just what are you saying... need to completely silence the SECU members? Is the right to vote next?

      Delete
    7. 9:53.. Putting words in my mouth, as always. Of course anyone who just voted, including the board, didn’t hijack the meeting. You did with you stuttering and stammering misinformation speech. Other point is resolution passed but it accomplished or changed nothing. You said so yourself. So why waste everyone’s time?

And, don’t be stupid. How does a director vote, regardless, of the outcome, hijack the meeting? That’s the purpose of the meeting.

    8. This administration and board will not allow the members to view the 2023 annual meeting and judge for themselves. After allowing comments, they then took the 2023 video down. Criticism is totally not tolerated. Only fealty to the board and administration is acceptable. Loyalty only to the board-- not to credit union principles.

    9. "Every lever, power, angle, procedure and process available will be used to prevent that."
Now that is how to treat your member / owners ...
reeks of a dictatorship to me ...

    10. What do bylaws say about posting. Videos of prior meeting? Are they required to do so from bylaws or NC or fed laws?

      Delete
    11. 11:12am "i. Posting of bylaws on website: FCUs that maintain a website must post a copy of the FCU's bylaws on the website. After adopting amendments, FCUs must post an updated copy of the bylaws. An FCU is not required to establish and maintain a website solely for this purpose,
      however."
