SECU What's Next? First, The Political Primer... Then The Slither!

https://img0.etsystatic.com/002/0/6771186/il_fullxfull.372244258_odlb.jpg .... North Carolina is purple.

😎 In politics these days, when you mix red and blue; you usually don't get purple... you often just get a mess.

The North Carolina Legislature is a "bicameral" body of two chambers, House and Senate. North Carolinians elect 50 senators and 120 house members to represent their interests and to approve the laws, rules, and budget by which the State will operate.  The "R's" control the Senate and the House; the Governor is a "D". The Legislature meets in a two year "session" - the main "long session" in odd years, followed by the clean up "short session" in even years.

Bashing politicians is a routine sport, long practiced by the citizenry of every state, every country. Conflict and controversy are the norm; politics is extremely difficult work... lots of people are always left unhappy. The best politicians are smart, thick-skinned, convinced, and - believe it or not - explicitly honest... at least with their political peers.

The Carolinas' Credit Union League (CCUL) has been trying for two sessions to get legislation passed - H410 in 2023, now H187 in 2025 - which would enable credit unions to permit anyone in the U.S. to join, including every type of business entity, tees up commercial lending, and appears to anticipate a "corporate banking-type" structure over the horizon. Want a credible, independent assessment of the bill? - try here [link].

The statutory changes proposed by H187 represent a major shift in the cooperative, member-owned structure of North Carolina credit unions and a fundamental shift in the competitive balance between all NC financial entities. As you, might imagine "all h... " e-r-r "purple" has broken loose.

For three years now, Mr. Dan Schline, CEO of the Carolinas' Credit Union League, hasn't been able to convince our 170 elected representatives of his case (neither H410, nor H187) based on its merits - in open, transparent discussion and debate. So, the CCUL decided to try another route...

   Tomorrow... the slither!
