Do you smell something burning?
Across the U.S., we're having a fiery debate over voting practices and elections. Although the rhetoric is fierce, the differing sides aren't really that far apart. Everyone wants only eligible citizens voting, everyone wants all eligible citizens to have the chance to vote. Everyone agrees that elections are crucial, the heart and bedrock of our - and every! - democracy.
Why so much concern this year over SECU Board election practices and the Annual Membership Meeting? Why not quit whining and move on? Four reasons:
1) You've already witnessed how SECU members - and your voice! - have been shut out of the Annual Meeting by the Board of Directors. Leaves you speechless doesn't it!

2) The SECU Board passed a bylaw amendment in September, 2025 to prohibit member-nominated board candidates unless the candidate - in just 3 weeks time! - can get 15,000+ members to sign a support petition. That change will effectively eliminate any likelihood of open board elections at SECU.
3) Our CEO Leigh Brady publicly refused to acknowledge the passage of that amendment when asked in front of the entire membership at the 2025 Annual Meeting [link]. One has to wonder why hide the truth from SECU members?
4) If SECU members can no longer participate in the Annual Meeting and there is no longer an election by the members of the Board of Directors; won't "They" soon ask why have an Annual Meeting at all?

ReplyDeleteCorrupt? Give me break. There as 1 member resolution brought in 30 years, and a fraction of members attended and voted in elections. So we can get all dramatic about this criminal suppression of member democratic rights, but let’s acknowledge members very rarely engaged and exercised their rights and took advantage of the privilege (speaking at a meeting is not a right)
DeleteAny intellectually honest person should realize these roles protect the broader membership. It’s not right that a resolution could be brought and voted on at the annual meeting when only a fraction can attend. And, there are multiple ways and channels that members can ask questions and provide feedback. Having members stand up at an annual meeting and say the same thing over and over again from someone else’s talking points, on a topic the Board had heard and asked and answered ad nauseum adds no value.
You speak with forked tongue. Argue one side of the issue when it suits your purpose and then turn around and argue the other side when it does not. People aren't as stupid as you play them to be. Oh brother...

Delete11:24. Case in point. Victim and drama. Your core right as a member owner is to vote in director elections. Anyone take that right away from you? Please forward that member communication. I missed it. Then educate yourself on what member owner rights are vs. some preferred process (privilege) you have in mind. Then, search to go join a CU that lets you do all things you want and we used to, and report back to us what you learn.
